festations down to the foundation of the poleis, the conquest of markets in the Mediterranean, and the phenomenon of colonization. The frenzy of building that accompanied the growth of the cities is reflected in the design of the temple, the most signifi
cant building in Greek architecture and intended to house the deity. At first the latter was represented by wooden statuettes and it was not until the middle of the seventh century that the first true sculptures began to appear. \par
